What an awesome Wednesday in the big city! It was another great day on the sites for all of the squads. Our groups in doing VBS in the parks are seeing more and more kids pour in each day! Our soup kitchen squad had another long day of chopping vegetables and preparing dinner for the homeless and needy. Today was their last day to work at the soup kitchen, so it was an emotional goodbye at the end of the day. Tomorrow they will disperse and help where needed at the VBS sites. Our warehouse squad put in another hard day of work. They will return to the warehouse for one last day tomorrow. Tomorrow is the last day for all of the squads since Friday is our free day. Continue to pray for all of our participants on their last day tomorrow as they have one more chance to share the love of Christ with the people of New York. Everyone is pumped up and ready to finish strong tomorrow on our last day of serving here at Mission Serve New York City!
Another long, hot day here in the Big Apple. Each squad headed out early this morning for round number 2 on the work sites. It was another successful day for us! Each squad working VBS in the parks had more kids than yesterday! The soup kitchen squad served breakfast to a large group of people and then immediately began preparing a dinner of salmon filets. They totally rocked the hair nets and aprons while having a great time serving the needy and sharing with them the love of Christ. Today was the first day on site for our warehouse squad. They are working in the New York Food Bank Distribution Center. Today they sorted and packed hundreds of boxes of everything from cereal and canned food to diapers, cleaning supplies, and health products. At the end of the day, they had packed enough boxes to provide food and supplies to almost 4000 families in need! It was an awesome way to impact the people here in New York City!
Tonight was our Concert of Prayer. Our worship time consisted of quiet reflection, prayers of thanksgiving and confession, and the giving of our Missions Offering. At the end of the service, each adult leader followed the example set by Christ and washed the feet while praying over each student from their church. It was a powerful experience where the Holy Spirit was definitely moving!
Tomorrow is day 3 on the sites so continue to keep our squads and the people they are working with in your prayers! Don't forget to send a message to a participant by clicking here!
Well, we made it through the first day on the worksites! It was a long, tiring, and unusually hot day, but all of our squads worked hard all day. We have 4 squads in the Crown Heights community in Brooklyn. One squad is doing VBS in a local park for Greater Restoration Baptist Church. Another is running a basketball camp in the same park. Our third squad in that area is painting the inside of a church member's home, and the last squad is doing VBS in a local park for Abundant Life Church. Our two remaining squads are working in Harlem and the Bronx for the New York Food Bank. One is helping serve in a soup kitchen in Harlem, while the other is working in a food distribution warehouse in the Bronx. All of our squads had a great day today! We are excited about what God has in store for us tomorrow!
We all returned to the hostel and had a delicious spaghetti supper! During worship tonight, Chuck talked about being GROUNDED and Called. He talked of how each of us has a calling in our life, and we were challenged to seek out what God has called us to do for His kingdom.
Keep the prayers coming our way as we head out tomorrow for another long and eventful day!
Today was an awesome day here in the Big Apple! We have 3 church groups (Long Green Baptist, Sandy Run Baptist, and Tabernacle Baptist) for a total of 50 participants here in New York City this week! Sandy Run arrived via plane on Friday and hit the ground running (well actually walking) for some sight seeing. Tabernacle and Long Green arrived by bus yesterday to join us. After getting settled in here at the International Hostelling: American Youth Hostel we had our first meal together: New York style pizza! In worship last night our speaker, Chuck, introduced our theme for the week: Grounded. He talked about how before we do anythig else in life, we must be GROUNDED in Christ. He challenged us to look within ourselves and make sure we are Grounded in Christ before we go out and try to serve others this week.
Today we woke up to a wonderful breakfast of bacon and eggs! Then all 50 of us hopped on the subway at 96th street and rode about 45 minutes to Crown Heights, Brooklyn. 4 out of our 6 squads this week will be working in this community. This morning our group split in two with one half joining worship at Greater Restoration Baptist Church and the other worshipping at Abundant Life Church. It was a great time of fellowship for everyone! After church the groups had the afternoon off for a little more sightseeing. Two of the goups even rode the subway down to check out Coney Island and have a hotdog! Tonight we had a delicious supper of poppyseed chicken and a great worship time where we were challenged to be GROUNDED and Prepared. Prepared for the work we are going to do this week and the people we are going to meet.
Pray for our squads as they head out tomorrow morning for the first day on the work sites! It's going to be an amazing week! Don't forget to send some love to a particiapant through our ServEmail! Click here
