This morning we all headed out to Antigua, a little town outside of Guatemala City. Anitgua is one of the oldest cities in Central America, and is the site of many shopping markets and ancient Mayan ruins. We ended the trip by driving up a mountainside to view Antigua from above, and the volcano that resides right behind it. After we returned, we all just relaxed, ate supper together one last time, and then had a little celebration, where we watched the Mission Cam and recognized a few people.
We are all praying that the people of Guatemala have seen God's love this week through us. As Joe reminds us, the only way to break the cycle of "dump dwellers" is to reach out to the children of this city in Jesus' name. Continue to pray for this city as we do, and also pray for all the people that attended the project this week, that they have been touched be God also.
Thanks for all the support and prayers! This has been a great week! Hasta Luego!
Last day on sites today! It was a tough "adios" for everyone leaving the Guatemalan people they have developed relationships with this week. Our Jesucristo squad got construction on the church off to a great start, so the church should be able to finish it easily. Our VBS squads said a sad goodbye to all the children, but left them happy with lots of gifts and toys, and donated money, food, and more to the day care at Tabitha. The construction squad at Tabitha finished up their project of fencing in the top roof floor of the day care, so now the children have more room to play outside! We pray that the children and their families were impacted by the love of the students and the love of God!
Tonight at worship, we looked at James 1,
22Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror 24and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it—he will be blessed in what he does.
Bliss spoke about being doers of the Word, and reaching out to people in all aspects of our lives.
Tomorrow, the groups are traveling to Antigua, a village town with lots of shopping and restaurants! Pray for safety!
What an experience today! The construction squads are still hard at work! And the VBS squads are too, although one squad tried something a little different today. They evangelized on the streets around Jesucristo and passed out fliers for the movie showing tonight. Tonight, instead of our regular worship time, we packed up after dinner and headed to Jesucristo Church again! We led the crowd in a few bilingual worship songs (which is always fun), and then a movie was played called "La Esperanza" or " the hope." It portrayed Bible stories, from the Creation to Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection. Then, Bliss presented the gospel and gave an invitation to accept Christ. It was a great experience to be outside with the people and to play a part in wroship and presentation of the Gospel.
Tomorrow is the last day on the worksites. Pray that squads will leave an impact on the people around them!
Another hard day of work has come and gone! The construction squad at the dump cemented the floor today, and is almost completely done wth its job! Both VBS squads continue to work hard, with lots of playful children to attend to! We paid a few house visits today to families that attend Tabitha church (a VBS site) and live in the dump. The squads brought bags of toys and candy to the children, and we prayed over each house and family. Of course a translator helped us, letting the people know what we prayed. How great it is that every tongue, no matter what language, can cry out to our God!
Tonight at worship, our focus was On Demand: Hope. Bliss spoke on Matthew 5:14-16,
"You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven."
Notice that it says we ARE the light...not maybe, might be, could be one day...ARE! We talked about our own mission fields and how we can share that light with others.
Continue to pray for the squads and for the people of Guatemala as we have many more opportunities this week to share the love of Christ.
And remember that you can still send some ServEmail! Click here to show some love.
Buenos Noches! Today was the first day on sites for all the squads! The sites included three construction squads, two VBS squads, and one medical squad. Two of the construction sites were at churches, but the remaining one was in the city dump, an area where homes are all conjoined, and most are one room, no floor, and some even no roof. The lady whose "home" is being worked on lost her oldest child to a lung condition that was cause by the poor condition of living in the dump. Pray that the squad can provide hope to the most hopeless of people.
The VBS squads had a great turnout! One squad close to the area of the dump had 67 children, mostly toddlers. And the other location has over 800 kids! As you can imagine, both squads are very busy! The medical squad provided free health screenings to families. Each squad has at least one person that can speak and translate Spanish.
Tonight, our focus was On Demand: Missions. Bliss spoke about how the greatest abiility a Christian can have is availability. We studied The Great Commission:
19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in[a] the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matthew 28:19-20
Hasta Luego!
Hola otra vez! What a great day in Guatemala City! This morning, groups started off the day with a breakfast of toast and papaya. Each squad went together to one of two local churches, Jesus Cristo and Jerusalen. So yes, we enjoyed church in Spanish this morning! :) But isn't it great to know that we all serve the same great God, no matter what language or ethnicity? As we sang this morning "Hosana, hosana, hosana al hijo de David."
Tonight, Bliss spoke about On Demand Love again. We all discussed what true love is, and what things are in the way of us truly being madly in love with our Lord. And also, how we can share His love with others.
We are looking forward to our first day on sites tomorrow! Don't forget to send some encouragement to a participant by clicking here!
Hola! All the groups are in safely! We had two groups arrive late last night, and the last three landed this morning. Everyone is just relaxing and getting settled in here at our home for the week. We are staying at the Guatemala Baptist Seminary here in Guatemala City. We had a lunch of fried chicken and tortillas. Tonight is our first night of worship where our speaker, Bliss Steele, will be talking about love and the greatest commandment from Matthew 22:37-40.
We are tired but excited about starting the week. Tomorrow the church groups will be worshipping at local churches here in Guatemala City!
Guatemala continues to be a great project for Mission Serve. Through our partnership will the Guatemala Baptist Convention, our students will be able to minister to children in local schools and assist churches with much needed repairs. Lodging will be at the Guatemala Baptist Seminary which has dorms and bunk beds for each student. The price includes lodging, meals, building materials, translators, transportation, and secondary insurance. This a great project for groups looking for their first time international missions experience. This a great opportunity to minister to local churches and to enhance their impact in the community.
